The surgery is over, the implants are in place, and you just can’t
seem to get yourself out of bed…
Is this normal?
Recovering from breast augmentation surgery can be a lengthy and
painful process. The healing process will generally progress in
this manner:
First 24 to 48 Hours
- This
will be the most uncomfortable time for most women. During this
time they will experience fatigue and breast pain. It is also
normal to feel nauseated after waking from the anaesthesia.
- The patient’s chest may also feel tight and uncomfortable,
and breasts will be very firm, high, and swollen.
- It is normal for the patient’s arms and back to be sore.
Medication can be prescribed to minimize discomfort.
First Two Weeks
- Minor fatigue and breast pain will ensue.
- After a few days, the surgical dressings are removed, and the
patient receives a surgical bra.
- The stitches are removed in about one week.
- Many women experience a burning sensation in their nipples,
but this will diminish in a couple of days.
- The bruises on the patient’s breasts begin to fade.
- Many women are able to return to work within no longer than
one week.
Two Weeks to Three Months
- The patient’s breasts are extremely sensitive for several
weeks after the operation. This lasts for three to four weeks.
- The breasts will remain swollen for about four to five weeks.
- After about a month, the swelling will be gone and they
will be lower, smaller and softer. It may take up to a year
for the implants to settle into a permanent position.
- The scars on the patient’s breasts will remain firm and
red for about six weeks. These scars will only begin to
fade after several months.
- Strenuous activities and exercise can be resumed about one
month following surgery.
Here is a brief and helpful outline of what to expect after surgery:
- PAIN: moderate to severe discomfort following surgery,
1 – 2 weeks of pain medication
- SWELLING: may subside anywhere between 2 weeks and 2
months
- BRUISING: bruising lasts for up to 2 weeks
- NUMBNESS: numbness lasts for 1 – 2 weeks
- EXERCISE: it is recommended to wait at least 2 –
4 weeks before exercising
